We spent the week of New Year’s at the Edelweiss Inn in Taos Ski Valley. The weather cooperated with 2 days of snow leaving us with two powder days and 12 inches of the white fluffy stuff. Here are a few images from the trip.
Taos Ski Valley is one of my favorite destinations in the world. We visit both winter for the world class skiing and in the summer for the quiet, hiking, and cooler weather. We have stayed in most of the lodging available in the village. My brother is considering a trip up this winter and he asked for some direction on lodging. I found my self putting together a long email and thought it would be worth posting. No particular order to the listings.
Edelweiss Spa and Lodge
Most luxurious on the mountain, and the newest. Very nice, with the slopes right outside the door! Amenities are nice with a restaurant and bar downstairs. Spa services in-house, and convenient ski lockers. Indoor parking in the basement!!!
The most convenient location with Al’s run lift literally only a few steps from door from the ski valet for the hotel. Don’t take a first floor unit unless you have to. Best restaurant in the valley, hands down.
Small, but very usable two bedroom condos located up on the beginners slope. The split level floor plan is useful, as the living-room is upstairs and all bedrooms are downstairs. Very good ski in/ski out. We have stayed here 4 times total, and have always enjoyed it. A bit dated, but very functional. Don’t arrive after hours unless you have four wheel drive! Ask for a top building unit.
Snow Bear Condo
We stayed here for 6 nights a few years ago. It has been our least favorite, but it has had a change in ownership and a complete makeover since, so I don’t know how it would be now. It is ski-in/ski-out only when there is ample snow, and the trails to and from would qualify as blue/black. It is a bit removed from the rest of the village.
Rio Hondo Condos
We loved our stay here! It is VERY convenient to the ski-school, a bit less so for the other lifts, but still not bad! They have a wonderful outdoor hot tub that is wonderful to sit in when it snows. I can recommend highly. Best parking of anything in the valley expcept the Edelweiss. The only downside I can think of is that is removed from the village by a brisk walk, but still a great place to stay.
